In the gospels, three wisemen travel from a far and foreign land through unknown territory to seek the newborn king, Jesus Christ. Their path is full of uncertainty, but a bright star shines through the darkness and guides their way. We, too, can allow God to guide us during the inevitable uncertainty we face. In return, let us be disciples of Christ’s bright hope to teens experiencing extreme uncertainty and hopelessness.

TreeHouse strives to remove as many barriers as possible for teens who journey with us, and providing free transportation to most programs is one of the many ways we make connection and engagement possible. From the outside, our TreeHouse vans may appear to be ordinary. But the inside tells the stories of teens finding safe space and healing. During “windshield time,” we hear countless stories as teens feel safe to openly share.

Whether the issues relate to family, school, relationships, addictions, or mental health, these are the teen stories that keep the mission of TreeHouse bright!

From the outside, our vans may appear to be ordinary, but the inside tells a different story. On the inside, we hear teen stories of transformation and growth—stories like TJ’s.

Prior to his eighth-grade year at Hopkins High School, TJ had a hard time socially at school. He was often bullied by his classmates because of his weight. The constant bullying led to fights, and he was suspended several times.

Despite the path TJ seemed to be heading down, he continued to get in the van–week after week–to head to TreeHouse programs. After spending the past spring and summer working on tactics to calm himself instead of react, the staff witnessed tremendous strides in his self-confidence.

Staff at TreeHouse were happy to share that, “in the van on our way to our summer trip, TJ talked about how excited he was to get back to school, how he was going to start off on the right foot — his goals were to have zero fights and minimize late assignments.”

TJ has the room to change and grow as he continues to attend TreeHouse.

Thoughts of suicide, anxious thoughts, and treatment for mental health, emotional, or behavioral problems are struggles many teens encounter. Many of our teens are in need of safe spaces and an opportunity to be guided through life’s challenges.

Holly is a teen who has struggled with mental health her entire life. Her hope for her future is to “have stable mental health without having to have therapy”…

At the beginning of his sophomore year in high school, Josiah was introduced to vaping. With a pre-determined attitude toward the activity, he cautiously tried, despite thinking it would be awful and self-destructive. However, in a short amount of time, Josiah realized he had become addicted to nicotine…

It was a typical Tuesday night support group when Emma hopped in the front seat of the van. Her demeanor was all but typical; clearly, there was something weighing heavily on her heart.

It took only a few questions from the concerned TreeHouse staff driver before tears began to stream down Emma’s face. She began opening up about her boyfriend …

Growing up in a family of six, living paycheck to paycheck, was the start of Kamara’s unstable home life. Her parents had immigrated from Liberia and faced an extreme trial when the father was deported after committing a criminal offense. The family was torn apart in front of the eyes of Kamara and her three sisters.

Kamara’s desire to fit into American culture and move away from the family’s traditional African norms caused friction. Her mother showed considerable disapproval of Kamara’s piercings, tattoos, and changing lifestyle.

Kamara yearned to belong, and remarked to a mentor, “I just wanted to graduate from high school and move out of my mom’s house. But TreeHouse helped me to see things from my mom’s perspective. I realize that she is hurting too.” Both face uncertainty and TreeHouse is walking with them.
